Finding a place. Building a voice.

Founded in Miami by Venezuelan entrepreneur Gustavo Deseda, DSPLACE brings together an immigrant founder’s journey and a creative ambition: to build a brand around design, freedom and community.

The name began with the Spanish word for “displaced.” It became DISPLACE, then DSPLACE. Movement became part of the brand’s identity from the very beginning.

Freedom is the starting point.

DSPLACE creates clothing for people in motion. Its collections explore comfort, personal expression and a wardrobe that belongs in everyday life.

The brand’s philosophy treats freedom as a luxury: the freedom to evolve and pursue a life of your own. That idea connects the clothes to the story behind them.

A real decision behind the brand

Trying to do it all. Learning to choose.

Early on, DSPLACE tried to develop too many categories at once. Stepping back and focusing on its strongest products became part of the way forward.

THE CHALLENGE

Spreading resources thin.

Developing too many clothing categories at once stretched limited time and capital.

THE DECISION

Return to the product.

Concentrate the effort on the categories the brand could do best.

THE DISCUSSION

Grow with intention.

How does a founder decide what to build now and what to leave for later?

04 / From an idea to a physical place

Two cities. One identity.

Miami and Caracas make the story tangible: places where the design meets the people who wear it.

DSPLACE. In real life.

Music, sport and everyday culture. The brand becomes part of the lives of the people who wear it.

What Gustavo learned building DSPLACE.

Founder · CEO & Chief Creative Officer

Gustavo leads the brand’s creative direction, product and expansion partnerships. He brings the perspective of a Venezuelan founder who built DSPLACE in Miami and later took the brand back to Caracas.

DSPLACE in the classroom.

DSPLACE became the focus of an Industry Project exploring how a fashion brand could enter premium hospitality environments. Working with the student team, Gustavo contributed to concept refinement and the development of a partner proposal and media kit.

The class developed two strategic concepts for DSPLACE, with final presentations scheduled for June 17, 2026. The project connected brand positioning, partnerships and real business decisions.

Pitch My Brand · Guest judge

Gustavo also accepted an invitation to join the jury for “Pitch My Brand” on September 24, 2026, reviewing business plan pitches and brand concepts developed by students in the Bachelor’s Fashion Business program.

A story beyond the store.

For Harvard’s Latino community

From Venezuela to Miami. Then back to Caracas.

Gustavo speaks candidly about leaving Venezuela, building DSPLACE in Miami and learning which ideas were worth pursuing. It is a story about the decisions, mistakes and relationships behind the finished product.

The conversation stays close to what actually happened: the origin of the name, the cost of trying to build too much at once, and why opening physical stores changed the brand.

01

How displacement shaped the name.

The personal history behind DISPLACE, its evolution into DSPLACE and the idea of movement at the center of the brand.

02

What DSPLACE stopped doing.

Why the team narrowed its product focus after spreading time and capital across too many categories.

03

Why the stores matter.

What Brickell and Las Mercedes taught the team about community, culture and building a real relationship with customers.

There is more to share. I’d be glad to continue the conversation in person and take questions from the audience.
